Cat blood donation

Requirements for blood donor cats

In order for your cat to donate blood safely, it must meet certain criteria:

☐ Lives exclusively in germany or in countries/regions with a comparatively low risk of infection

At least 1 year old

At least 4 kg body weight

☐ The donor animal must not be free

Clinically healthy and not pregnant/lactating 

Has Never donated or received blood products

☐ Health status: generally healthy, no chronic illnesses

☐ Up-to-date and complete vaccinated, regularly dewormed, parasite protection

Blood donation process

Each donation is preceded by a thorough veterinary examination to ensure that your cat is healthy. A blood sample is taken to determine the blood type and to check the general health status.

A total of around 90-120 minutes should be allowed to donate blood to the cat.

Blood collection:

☐ The actual donation usually comes from the Vein on the neck (Jugular vein)

☐ Duration of blood collection: approx. 10-25 minutes

 The puncture site on the neck will shaves and disinfects

☐ Approximately 7 ml/kg body weight blood is taken

After donating:

☐ It will be a Bandage around the neck laid out which removed the next day Can be

☐ We offer your cat something to drink and a ration of food

frequency:

☐ Donations can be made approximately every 6 months
