How to spot fleas on your pet

Did you know that there are around 72 different flea species in Germany alone and that they often hide before your animal scratches itself pathologically? An infestation can therefore remain unnoticed for a long time. Fleas find their way to the host through the carbon dioxide in the air they breathe, heat and movement of the animals. After a generous meal, fleas can survive for up to two months without food and like to stay in the surrounding area.

How do you reliably test whether a flea infestation is present:

Comb the coat with a fine-toothed comb (flea comb) and then wipe the comb with a damp, white cloth. Then gently tap off the comb and rub the combed out over the cloth. Rusty brown faeces on the cloth may indicate fleas (blood meal of fleas).

What is there to do if your pet is infected with fleas:

Fleas often live in the area (floors, carpets, baskets, car upholstery). Wash anything washable as hot as possible or thoroughly vacuum anything that doesn't fit in the washing machine. Use preventive and therapeutic preparations (chewable tablets, spot-ons, collars) as recommended by the vet and always comply with the dosage and duration of use. Regular worming is also recommended as fleas can transmit tapeworms.

What are the dangers of flea bites:

Flea stings themselves are usually harmless, but they can transmit bacteria and tapeworms. In puppies and small dogs, severe infestations can lead to anemia. Allergies (flea saliva allergy dermatitis) are just as common. Cats can also get the so-called cat scratch disease. This is also known as Bartonellosis. Cats act as reservoirs, meaning they carry the pathogen and can pass it on to humans.
